Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser, ideal for Club Racing as well as Grand Prix IRC or ORC Racing
Versatility and performance are at the forefront of the Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser design concept. Upon commencing the design process for the boat, it was clear that the ultimate goal was to produce a fast, fun, and competitive inshore and offshore racer-cruiser that was as comfortable on the cruising grounds as it was on the race course. As difficult as it can be to achieve these goals, the end product’s primary attributes lend themselves to this versatility: moderate volume, high stability, a comfortable interior, modern appendages, and a manageable sailplan; all combined in a hull form born from the highest levels of grand-prix racing.
The hull form and appendages are direct descendants of the Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design office’s most recent developments in grand prix IRC and box rule racing. Through continuous analysis of existing yacht configurations and development of future hull forms through computational research, full scale analysis of performance data and continuous feedback from some of the world’s leading sailing programs, the design team is able to remain at the forefront of modern yacht design and ahead of the competition. All of this knowledge was brought into the development of the Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser. The hull form and appendage package are focused on performance and speed, but without sacrificing control on any point of sail in any sea conditions. The general performance target for the Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser was a well-rounded yacht that can perform in all conditions. The hull form exhibits low upright wetted surface that allows it to perform well in the light breeze, but the stability increases quickly when heeled to provide performance and comfortable sailing in heavier air. This versatility ensures that the yacht will be competitive under all racing conditions, both inshore and offshore and would make an ideal club racer.
The appendage sections and keel and rudder shape are developments of Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design’s latest research and are configured to offer full control to the helmsman in all conditions and through downwind maneuvers. The bulb is a direct development from the design team’s latest research.
The Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser composite structure was engineered by Reichel-Pugh in full compliance with ISO 12215 and the latest ISAF OSR Scantling Plan Approval requirements for Category 1 racing and Plan Approved by Germanischer Lloyd (GL). The engineering was approached with a full grand-prix mentality and the end goal to save overall weight and increase stiffness where it is most needed while maintaining the design safety factors required to make the Aquila RP45 Racer/Cruiser a fully offshore capable yacht. Detailed structural design and analysis and a careful selection of materials and building techniques has allowed the development of a weight, stiffness and cost optimized structure that does not compromise quality, finishing or racing characteristics.
The deck is styled with a modern open transom, shallow cockpit floor and low windage geometry. The deck layout has been optimized for racing with twin steering wheels and twin backstay winches, an aft of the steering stations traveller and German underdeck mainsheets while maintaining cruiser styling, comforts and characteristics such as the coaming seating and the coachroof that provide more headroom in the interior. The bowsprit is fully optimized for racing performance while also allowing for a practical all all-purpose downwind furling sail for cruising.
In the interior the yacht is efficiently fitted out for overnight offshore cruising and racing with a twin owner’s v berth forward, a fully enclosed head, a settee lounge sitting area with a fully equipped galley with sink and storage and a built in navigation station and more berths on the aft part of the yacht.
The double spreader, single backstay and fixed forestay rig provides a good balance of sail area and ease of adjustment for cruising while providing room for adjustment and re-configuration options for racing with a fathead mainsail with twin backstays.
Leading the world with a new breed of fast, fun and exciting yachts, the Aquila 45 boasts the perfect blend of the newest racing design features into a comfortably sized inshore / offshore racer / cruiser. She offers her owners thoroughbred performance of a true racing yacht that is both easy to sail with a short number of crew, yet offers the ability to carry a full compliment of 8 on overnight races, to the convenience of fast and comfortable weekend water cruising. Precision built by Sino-Eagle and Leopard Yacht Co. with exceptional craftsmanship by global marine leaders in carbon and composite building technologies, and current supplier of the Olympic Games rowing shells, the Aquila RP45 range is committed to competitive performance, value and price for all demanding yachtsmen.

PRESS RELEASE
Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design is pleased to announce that construction is underway for their latest generation of 52’ IRC optimized racing yacht at the McConaghy Boats facilities in Zhuhai, China. Highland Fling XII was commissioned by Lord Irvine Laidlaw of Rothiemay and is being built using advanced carbon pre-preg sandwich construction throughout. This is the second yacht in a row that Lord Laidlaw has commissioned from Reichel/Pugh, the first being the 82’ Wally, Highland Fling XI that took 2nd place in the Maxi Class in last month’s PalmaVela Regatta. The 52' design features a modern fully race optimized deck layout, a Southern Spars rig package and North Sails sail inventory.
The design of the hull and appendages has been driven by the owner’s request for a state of the art high performance racing yacht and features the latest research and design concepts in hull shape and appendages developed by the Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design team. The design builds upon the lessons learned from a successfully launched RP design line of IRC optimized TP52s and custom IRC 50-52 footers such as the winner of the 2010 Rolex Sydney Hobart Secret Men’s Business 3.5, the TP52 Pace (ex Ran, 2009 UK IRC National Champion), The Southern Cross 52s Vincitore & Vela Veloce (US IRC National Champions in 2009 & 2010 respectively) , and the CC52 Scarlet Runner (winner of the 2009 Audi Docklands Invitational in Australia), taking the design concept of IRC optimized 52’ fully offshore capable racers to a whole new level of all-around performance.
Reichel/Pugh Yacht Design developed the composite structural design in-house, building upon the success and experience of the design office’s engineering team in providing complete composite structural design analysis and solutions. Construction scantlings were developed to meet the latest ISAF Offshore Special Regulation Category “A” requirements with Plan Approval services provided by Germanischer Lloyd.
The yacht is scheduled to be launched in November 2011 in Florida, USA.
